Wintering Seed Posture

To me, this is very much a wintering posture. The seed hunkers down in the earth through the winter, keeping warm under the dissolving leaves, biding their time until they’re ready to begin to peek out in spring. People commonly sat like this before sitting in chairs became so prevalent, and many traditional cultures still use this posture when gathering together. Children naturally assume this posture as they play or investigate the miracles of a bug trundling about the garden. This posture feels in tune with the childlike awareness that is endlessly curious and joyful. You can nestle into this posture and feel contained and whole. Energetically, this posture is very grounding, and once you become comfortable in it, it can be deeply relaxing. It is said to aid the digestion and elimination processes.

If this isn’t the posture for you at the moment, you can feel into the seedlike energy by simply curling up in a ball, however you can, and just see what it’s like for your body and mind to wrap itself up tight like a seed.

You can also work towards this posture by placing a rolled-up towel under your heels. You can stand in front of a wall and use it to support you as you work your way a little lower each day. Try it with your feet together or apart. Also, you can begin by sitting on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and first bringing one knee towards you with your foot flat on the floor and then the other. Gradually you can bring the heel closer in towards your body.

For some people it is helpful to have a towel between your thighs and calves as you come down. Always work within your own ability and proceed slowly and steadily. Keep breathing and feeling into your body and your experience. Enjoy the exploration!
